How do YOU library? Meet Hena

Meet Hena: Parent, Professional & Library Champion

Two to three times a week, Hena’s family is at the Main library for storytime, where her daughter has learned far more than songs and stories. “She learned how to volunteer to answer questions; it taught her how to sit and listen, but also how to play, have fun, and make friends with other kids,” Hena explains. Three of her daughter’s closest friendships started right there in the storytime circle. Her 10-month-old son is already a regular too, captivated by the music and eager for the day he can join in fully. In the summer, Hena and her family meet friends at the Farmers’ Market and then they all head to the library together. “We’re building family traditions and community rhythms that center around this shared space–the Boulder library.”

For the Haines family, the library is also where their kids experience diversity in action—local and global art and music, Drag Story Time, people from all walks of life. But perhaps most importantly, it’s where they’re learning a fundamental truth about community: “A library space can feel like it’s yours while simultaneously belonging to all of the kids around you. You don’t always have to buy things—there are resources to share. In fact, a shared resource is more valuable and more powerful than anything a person or family could ever own by themselves.”

The Boulder Library Foundation makes programs like the storytimes, art exhibits, and Canyon Theater performances that families love possible—creating spaces where children don’t just learn to read, but learn how to be good friends and participating community members.

Library is a verb. Help us keep it that way. Support Library Giving Day with a gift today.
