Meet Erin Edwards: Archivist at Carnegie Library for Local History, a caretaker of our community’s collective memory
As an archivist, Erin spends her days making history accessible to others. She organizes collections of photographs and documents of daily and civic life in Boulder across decades. She creates catalog records so researchers can find exactly what they need. And she helps patrons spend hours digging deep into local history, family histories, the stories behind their homes, or crucial details for books they’re writing.
“It always amazes me to see the ways our patrons use the information at Carnegie,” she shares.
“People have found photographs of long lost relatives or unearthed the history of their home, kids and adults alike have researched local events that have shaped Boulder into what it is today and what it will become in the future—all pieces of information that would have been largely unavailable without this library and this work.”
One program Erin is especially excited about is the Maria Rogers Oral History Project, made possible by Boulder Library Foundation support. “Oral histories are such a unique and vital way for people to tell their stories. They really bring history to life,” she explains.
“Every time I come to work I learn something new,” says Erin, who grew up in South Boulder, remembers attending storytimes at the George Reynolds branch and now works at the Carnegie Library for Local History. “I truly cannot think of a day that I left work without taking some gem of new knowledge home with me.”
