Boulder Library Foundation Steps up to Launch a Fundraising Campaign to Help a Library Worker Out (HALO)
Library staff are the heart and soul that make the Boulder Public Library one of the greatest public assets in our community. However, due to the COVID-19 crisis, the City of Boulder has been forced to furlough 737 employees. As a result, 70% of the library staff have been furloughed until at least June 28th, 2020. Always eager and ready to help, our beloved librarians could use a helping hand, now more than ever, from the greater Boulder community.
Boulder Public Library Closure Amid COVID-19
The Boulder Library Foundation has given so much to Boulder Public Library – and, in turn, our community – over the past 45 years. As the season of giving approaches this year, I invite you to consider supporting the new north Boulder Library by contributing to the Boulder Library Foundation.

Daily Camera OpEd: North Boulder Library a key priority
Incorporated in 1974, the foundation was formed as a way for people to directly support the library and its programs — outside of the city budgeting process. That support has been critical as library attendance and subsequent programming has grown exponentially while the operating budget has remained relatively unchanged over the last 15 years. Even today, as there is increased conversation about the need to establish permanent and sustainable funding streams for the library, our role and support, as the foundation, has never been more critical as we look to the future.
The Future of the Library
Moving past attendance, the library enjoys substantial volunteer support. Last year more than 1,000 community members donated over 18,000 hours, or the equivalent of 11 full time staff. These volunteers are absolutely critical to the success of the library because the Boulder Public Library has operated without a substantial increase in operating funding since 2002. That’s right, as library attendance increased by more than 33% since 2002, the operating budget has remained flat – for the last 17 years.
The Disappearing Salad Bowl
On a day when the temperature hit triple digits outside, the Bee Chicas and their class were staying cool in the library and learning about the importance of pollinators. The Bee Chicas lively presentation highlighted helpful recommendations on what each of us can do to promote pollinators, which are not just honey bees, but include native bees, butterflies, moths, birds and many others. A fun hands-on part of the class asked participants to pick out various fruits and vegetable and guess which relied on pollinators to succeed. The answer: lots and lots! Without pollinators, we would only be able to enjoy a fraction of the food on our table.
A New Look. The Same Mission.
First, we can’t thank the residents of Boulder enough for their support of our Boulder Public Library. Since 1974 we have been funding nearly 90% of all programming at BPL – from Summer of Discovery (summer reading program) to BLDG 61 (our amazing makerspace), and dozens of other programs. Our work wouldn’t be possible without your support – a heartfelt THANK YOU!
RL Stine Comes to the Library
It’s not every day that the Boulder Public Library gets a visit from an author who has sold over 400 million books, but that’s exactly what happened on the evening of May 1.
